WHO WE ARE
Walanbaa is an empowerment-based initiative founded by acclaimed Aboriginal entertainer and cultural practitioner Mitch, who has a Degree in Social Work, with a strong emphasis on reaching Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth.
Walanbaa, which means Strong, celebrates cultural diversity and works across cultures to strengthen the future for all families. Mitch’s team aims to deliver interactive programs and resources that are driven through a culturally sensitive framework empowering participants to engage with identity, self-belief, cultural location and even career pathways. The Walanbaa practitioners offer traditional and contemporary inclusions suitable for children and young people of all ages. Ultimately, Walanbaa aims to empower participants to make strong positive choices for their lives.
WHAT WE DO
The vision of Walanbaa is to promote positive Aboriginal experiences through:
Interactive cultural performances
Music performances and song writing workshops
Staff cultural awareness workshops
The Early Childhood Program for little ones is age appropriate and a lot of fun. Walanbaa will discuss beforehand with teachers their approach and incorporate face painting, artwork and songs into their visits each week.
CENTRE INDIGENOUS INCURSION DAY
Walanbaa can visit a school for a day for a short one-off visit which incorporates highlights from their Early Childhood Program.
Walanbaa can provide an engaging innovative, inclusive professional entertainment package for corporate functions. Included in an interactive show is acknowledgement of country, traditional dance, songs and a didgeridoo performance.
West Papuan Youth Project
One of Walanbaa’s most successful projects was the ‘The West Papuan Youth Project’ which brought together West Papuan and Indigenous youth to engage in a week-long program. The project was a part of a vision to empower First Nation peoples from around the globe, starting with their local community. This experience empowered the youth participants to gain a deeper understanding of each other as well as strengthening their own identity, self-worth and sense of belonging, through the exploration of culture, story, music, dance, ceremony, sound production and videography.
